Thursday Mozilla began issuing auto update commands to those who still use Mozilla’s Firefox 3.0 browser. This will be the first attempt by Mozilla to get it’s users to update to Firefox 3.5 before it discontinues support for Firefox 3.0 in January 2010.
Firefox 3.5.2, is the current version and 3.0.13, is the most up-to-date of Mozilla’s 2008 browser.
Users have been able to upgrade to Firefox 3.5 for the last two months by downloading the update browser from Mozilla’s website or manually triggering “Check for Updates” under the help menu of the browser.
When you receive the update offer you can choose to postpone it for 24 hours or decline it. However it does not block the feature permanently automatically seeking for new updates. Mozilla has said they may offer another auto update, but it wont be for several weeks or possibly months.
According to Net Applications, only 20% of all Firefox users are running Mozilla’s up-to-date browser. The biggest chuck of users at 72% still are using Mozilla’s out-of-date browser 3.0 and the remaining 8% are running versions that are older than 3.0.
It is always important to keep your software up-to-date. Out of date software can lead to big security holes that may leave your machine open for attack.
