A URL-shortening service that makes long Web addresses shorter for use on micro-blogging sites like Twitter was hacked over the weekend, sending millions of users to a unintended destination.
Cligs, the rival of a better known URL-shortening service .. and bit.ly was attacked and the millions were redirected to Kevin Saban’s blog, which appears on the Orange County Register’s Web site. After Sabin notices a dramatic upswing of traffic he contacted Pierre Far the creator of Cligs.
Thankfully the redirected URL was not to a malware and exploit infested website. The turnout could of been worse if that was the case. Cligs reported that the attack came from a vulnerability in its editing function. Cligs disabled all redirecting and fixed the vulnerability and restored all URL’s to their intended destination.
At this point the person who is possibly at fault for this attack lives in Canada.
